About

How long have you been working as a photographer?

I’ve been a commercial photographer for about 20 years now. I originally trained as a graphic designer and then spent 3 years assisting a car photographer. Obviously I learnt more about photography while being an assistant than as a graphics student but it also means that I can easily navigate my way around a design layout and I don’t mind if a photo gets covered with type.

What are the main types of subject you photograph?

There’s not much I haven’t photographed but my most common types of subject are: architecture: interiors and exteriors of offices, houses and factories and still life studio product shots for brochures and catalogues. I also shoot a lot of art for galleries, exhibitions and books plus I can often be found wearing a hi-viz jacket and steel toe boots photographing an industrial product installation on a building site. I photograph on building sites often enough to have a CSCS card which is quite unusual for a photographer.

Which areas of the country do you cover?

I usually work within a 100 mile radius of Chester and that includes many of the major towns in Cheshire such as Northwich, WInsford and Crewe. Further afield, there are regular trips to Manchester, Bradford, Leeds, Liverpool, Nottingham, North Wales including Wrexham, Preston, The Lake District, Birmingham and Coventry in the West Midlands. I do often travel well beyond that area too and have worked within a few miles of the east, south and west coasts of the UK with the occasional commission in Scotland.

Do you shoot with fIlm or digital?

I’m currently on my seventh Nikon digital camera although I started out with film using a Mamiya RB67 and Sinar 5×4. As I started with film it means that I can get the shot ‘in camera’ as often as possible without having to ‘fix it in post’ although I will sometimes blend a couple of files together if the end result will benefit.

Do you have a studio?

I’m able to produce small table top studio shots in-house but in the majority of cases I find it much more convenient to travel to the location of the product to be photographed. Usually this is just because the product is too big and bulky to be transported to me easily and I’ve set up many studio shots in offices, warehouses and meeting rooms.

Were all the photos shown on the website produced as commissions?

Mostly yes, and all of the photos were produced with a commercial use in mind. Some of the work was produced as stock for either Getty or Alamy. I regularly produce new material for them which often takes the form of conceptual business and finance still life shots. The other work on the site is commissioned for a broad range of clients that includes advertising and design agencies, property developers and interior designers, construction and engineering companies, museums and galleries, schools, colleges and universities, book publishers and marketing agencies. The industry sectors I cover are also very varied and range from manufacturing, engineering, b2b, retail, utilities, pharmaceutical and the public sector.

66 Cities is a self initiated project to photograph the dusk skyline of each city in the UK. It’s more of a winter project than a summer one as the optimum time for a city twilight shot is between 4pm and 6pm when there’s still plenty of life in the city to capture. After about 7pm, most of the office lights will be off and traffic levels will be reduced and those are two things that are a major source of lighting for the final photograph.

Are photos available as stock?

I’ve been producing stock for many years and I have a large collection of stock images available for licensing. New work is added regularly and the photos can be found at Getty Images and Alamy.

Do you shoot video?

Not at the moment although I was recently commissioned to produce some time-lapse sequences of product installations.

Do you do weddings?

No.
